Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Well over half of our students have not yet scored proficient on the English portion of the state test. A huge percentage of our students are reading far below their grade level. Another mammoth chunk of our student body rarely read. Many experience great emotional distress in regards to reading.
I am the school librarian and a reading intervention teacher at a gigantic high school in an urban city in California.
I am committed to turning my students on to reading in an effort to raise their test scores, their literacy proficiency, and their attitude towards academic language.
My Project
In order to do this, I am excited to choose a class set of "The Outsiders" to read with them. This book reflects the lives of many of our students. It is about a "gang" of boys who are poor, restless, and aimless and how they desperately want to belong. It is filled with adventure and will resonate with my students, I am sure! I am looking forward to introducing this book to my students and planning innovative activities that will intellectually challenge them, bolster their literacy skills, and provide them with creative experiences.
