My Project
I will be changing grades, from 3rd to 6th grade, where I will be teaching 6th grade Reading and Language Arts. I want to create a more modern and sophisticated reading area which will appeal to middle school age students, inspiring them to read independently. My current reading area accessories are geared for lower grades, and do not create the correct "vibe" for older students. I am asking for appropriate cushions and furniture as well as, an accessible bookshelf and storage baskets.
Reasearch from a variety of sources indicates reading independently 15-20 minutes a day not only improves reading scores, but also has a positive impact on overall academic performance.
It is my goal to build on that research, by creating a comfortable, engaging environment for students to practice their reading. The students (spanning three reading classes per day) will use this area of our classroom daily on a rotating schedule (through our independent work centers) for independent reading and for a quiet work/study area.
By creating this relaxing, homey reading lounge environment, it is my wish to utilize an atmosphere that instills a love for independent reading- making reading for enjoyment (not just reading for information) part of their daily lives as they mature into young adulthood.
