My Students

My students love to learn!

Our suburban school has high poverty levels and we are small in size, but we are also big in heart. My students work hard every week to reach their goals. They ask questions and volunteer to read in class. I could not be more proud of their daily efforts to grow and succeed.

My Project

My students will work whole group, small group, and independently as they read through this novel based on the epic story about the Trojan War, 'The Iliad'. Our lessons will focus on vocabulary, fluency, writing, and critical thinking skills. Students will be able to independently use their learning to understand the power of words and images to transform lives and provide insight into the experiences of others and understanding of cultures and historical periods. They will use the characteristics of epic literature and both explicit and inferential evidence to support their conclusions. We will discuss how a character's ethics and values shape their actions. Students will apply what they learn to write, edit and revise informational summaries, a character analysis, an argument, and an oral presentation.

The history of mankind is rich and deep; however the textbook can only take us so far.

Classic literature, taught correctly and with the appropriate amount of support brings us full circle, making those historic connections truly come alive.
