Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?"-Anne Green Gables

My students look like any average 7 and 8 year olds: exuberant, excited about life, and entirely ready to take on the world.

However, they are lost in the shuffle of poverty, illiteracy, and cumbersome realities (single parent household, unemployment, violence infested neighborhoods). Many come to school very early so mom can take the next bus to get to work--if she has one--and stay long after school is out--when mom takes the bus back to pick them up. 94% of our students qualify for free and/or reduced lunch. They eat breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack at school through our program.

My Project

I am requesting a leveled reading start up library to better serve my students and their fluency and comprehension needs. Just as you and I were inspired at an early age to read and get lost in books full of adventures through worlds near and far, I would like for my students to be inspired to revel in the beauty of real and make-believe worlds that would motivate them. Reading about places most of my students would not even fathom going to would widen their horizons and open their minds and hearts to places and spaces that were once strange lands. These leveled reading books will assist my students in becoming better readers. They will not only read various books but read books that fit their fluency and comprehension levels--allowing for them to be more confident in their reading abilities. This confidence will then make them better and lasting readers for life!

Providing my students with this leveled reading start up library will enhance their reading, fluency, and comprehension skills.

In addition to the learning that they get in the classroom, they will be able to enter worlds they never thought possible and be lifelong learners, through reading alone! Their literacy will improve and their exposure to words and worlds will drastically expand!
