Children love to listen to stories. This is a wonderful way to help them to improve their reading fluency. The more they listen, the more reading they will be doing as they following along in the reader. This also includes a book that ties into our social studies, so they can learn history, too.
My students are enrolled in a magnet program that emphasizes voluntary integration in our large city in California.
Students apply from across the city, and there is usually a long waiting list to get in. This means that we have students of all backgrounds and nationalities--all devoted to an excellent education.
My Project
I'm requesting a cd player because the one I have is slowly dying. (I need to put a heavy object on top of it for the player to work.) I can't have my students use it, but there is a huge world out there for them to hear and read about. Having a listening center in my classroom also provides incentives for students to finish their work and practice their reading in a different modality (listening). It also adds another voice to the classroom--other than my own.
I'm sure we all agree that reading is important.
By providing a listening center, we have another way we can instill good reading habits early in children. This will impact their lives forever.
