My students are dedicated, passionate, and enthusiastic about learning. Through challenges many might find insurmountable, they are resilient, facing obstacles with optimism.
Though they are prepared to work hard, my students lack the resources to meet their needs; the percentage of English Language Learners in the 10th grade has increased by over 180% in the past year, but there has been no increase in staff or services.
Despite these odds, my students are compassionate and understanding, working to better their own skills while helping their classmates in English, Spanish, Pashto, and French.
My Project
To meet the needs of my students, I am revamping my sophomore English curriculum to include small group reading and listening stations (crucial for students still learning English) and critical writing and grammar interventions.
Through the use of Chromebooks, I will be able to implement these stations while giving students the small-group interventions they desperately need.
With these resources, all of my students will be better prepared to face the challenges of becoming college and career ready-- and my students learning English will especially benefit from the fluency practice and small-group assistance that the technology will afford us.
English class can empower us to speak up, to make our voices heard, and to experience new worlds through reading-- we just need the resources to help us learn together.
