Reading Learning Activities: an Alternative to Worksheets
My students need 2 sets of engaging work stations that will offer them a variety of practice on the basic skills and content for their grade level.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Denis Parsons Burkitt said it best when he said, "It is better to read a little and ponder a lot than to read a lot and ponder a little." Many of my students can read but lack the vocabulary skills and background knowledge to comprehend what they have read.
I work at a Title I, elementary school in inner city Houston, Texas.
The majority of our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. We service a large population of "at risk" students. The school funding available to the teachers at my school is minimal, so students lack additional resources needed to extend their knowledge. The students I work with are struggling readers. It is apparent with many of our students that the parental support at home is not available. To be successful, parents and teachers need to work together. I have noticed that motivating my students to complete assignments and turn in homework or pick up a book to read is challenging. I spend the majority of my free time online searching for fun and interesting activities that will motivate them to read and improve their comprehension. Increasing their vocabulary is essential to improving their comprehension. The materials I am requesting will be an fun and exciting alternative to worksheets.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting will allow students to take responsibility of their own learning. Each set requested will give students a variety of skills to choose from in comprehension and vocabulary. If the student is aware of the skills they are struggling in, they can choose a packet and work on it independently at their own desk. Students seem to be more engaged when given a choice. I will also assign packages to be completed by students. The activity packets are kid-friendly. They include detailed instructions and all the materials needed to complete the package successfully. Students will find these activities fun and engaging because it is not a boring worksheet and it allows them to work at their own pace. I can also use these packages to guide my small group instruction and as sponge activities for the students that come to class early or finish their work early.
I hope that you will consider supporting this project.
The school lacks funding to supply our students with fun and engaging learning activities. I strongly feel that my students will really benefit from the learning available in the requested material. Thank you in advance for help!
