This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a second year teacher to an exciting and energetic group of boys. All of my students are diagnosed as moderate/severe and have autism. They love to play, laugh, and run free at recess. When they want that in the classroom, it makes for a very festive day.

Functional reading skills are so important for students who are nonverbal or communicate in alternative ways.

Being able to recognize, read, and comprehend words, symbols, and images in our everyday environment is important for our safety, well-being, and ability to be a part of society.

Finding books that my students show a natural interest in about topics relative to everyday life is vastly important. As a new teacher, growing a library that my students can gain bits of important knowledge from is key. My hope is to grow a library they will never tire of and always find something that sparks their interest in reading.

My Project

As a second year teacher, I am building a new library for my classroom. Many of the books we have are worn and missing pages. We do not have many books that connect with topics of science, social studies, or history. Adding these books to our library, we will be able to use them to add to our lesson topics and expand learning.

Many of my students have emergent or limited reading skills and require incentive to reach toward expanding their reading skills in general.

Expanding our classroom library with books about subjects they have shown an interest in will help create an environment that encourages a love of reading for leisure as well as learning.

Studies show that children who are read to and read for leisure have an expanded vocabulary, show more empathy, develop a stronger imagination, and learn about the world around them beyond the home and classroom. I hope to build a library that helps my students have access to these type of gains.
