This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are from south Los Angeles County, the majority of them are Latinos, many are second language learners, and they attend a high school with over 2000 students. They are part of the Health, Science, and Medicine Academy at our high school.
My students are from a lower socio-economic community and many will be the first in their family to graduate high school.
With distance learning, it is even more important to provide as many scaffolds as possible for students.
My Project
This project will provide novels to students in my AP English Language and Composition class instead of relying on yet another digital copy. During this time of remote learning providing students with such a powerful novel allowing them to connect real-life events with current events and building on ideas about racial and social equality that they learned in reading To Kill a Mockingbird in my class last year. As these copies will belong to them they will be able to employ the close reading skills they've been practicing by annotating their own, personal copies. Following reading the novel they will have the opportunity to write three different practice essays in preparation for the 2021 AP Exam.
