This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine how it feels to struggle to read, to look at a blur of letters smattering a page of a book. Many of my emergent readers feel this way, despite desperately wanting to be able to read.

I teach in an urban community in Illinois.

Nearly 100% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and approximately half of my students are English Language Learners. My students often struggle with letter-sound knowledge and acquiring basic words we all need to know in order to read. Very few of my students can afford books to have at home, which makes frequent exposure to reading during the school day that much more necessary to ensure my students are successful.

My Project

My struggling readers come to school every day, eager to read and learn. For these students, mastering some basic sight words such as "and," "like," and "said" will boost their reading abilities significantly. In primary-level texts, these simple words make up nearly 80% of a book, yet are difficult to sound out. Sight word practice packs would greatly aid my students in sight word recognition. Each pack will include a book that focuses on two sight words we learn, as well as practice pages students can use to read, write, and draw these critical words. A small deck of flashcards will provide students with all the words they need to learn to be successful readers. These packs can be brought back and forth to and from school, enabling students to read to their families, boosting their self-confidence and promoting a strong home-school connection.
