Reading Is Traveling and Experiencing Life Vicariously!
Help me give my students the experience of exciting literature. "Because of Winn Dixie" is a book all children I have worked with love because it's about a dog and the motivations of decency, compassion, and friendship.

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love to read! They bring books to me to share and fix when pages become loose. They can't wait to read a sequel and get excited about all they learn. They love to make connections between characters in stories and their own experiences, and some of my boys and girls have a hard time putting a book aside when we have to get back to our lessons.
Once a year, when we have a book fair at school, I can see how longingly some students pick up a book they are interested in, only to put it back when they realize that they don't have enough money to purchase it.
My students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch and don't have many resources. The world comes to them through stories, and this allows them to share in the breadth of our life experiences. I want them to become a part of the wider world through reading.
My Project
My students don't get to travel much. All of them qualify for free breakfasts and lunches, and home budgets are tight. All the more reason to give them the opportunity to experience life styles through reading and discussing them in class. One of our English language standards is to make inferences, and this book allows us to do so. In terms of deepening our discussions, we also look at situations from various perspectives, which allows us to learn tolerance and understanding of other people. This book provides many opportunities to think about how others may feel and respond to a given situation.
Appreciating different points of view will broaden my students' horizons in so many ways, both personally, emotionally, and academically and teach them that we are all connected as human beings.
There are many other content standards that "Because of Winn Dixie" addresses, but our main goal is to enjoy reading, appreciate good literature, and learn about people and the world around us.
