My students need a classroom full of books for their independent reading time. We also need 30 bins for storing the books by genre in our classroom library.
The more that you read, the more that you will know. The more you learn, the more places that you'll go! -Dr. Seuss
Dr. Seuss describes our classrooms perfectly. Kids need to have books in their hands to grow as readers and writers!
The students in my school are reading in all grade levels.
We supply them with the latest and greatest books to help them develop their own preferences and reading identity. Each child has their own unique needs in one or more reading area that is addressed every day. Unfortunately, not all of our children have the luxury of having libraries at home. We, as teachers, send our books home with the students put books in their hands at home and at school! Sometimes, these concepts are not reinforced at home because many of our parents are working multiple jobs to support their family. Our students are from families that cannot always spend the money on academic games or tools to help their kids. These children deserve engaging books in their classroom!
My Project
Each day, the children will have independent reading time. During this time, students will read the book or books that they have chosen from our classroom library. Typically, each child will have anywhere from 2-5 books in their book box. When they finish these, they get new books! We try to find books that are interesting, exciting, and of high quality for the kids to read.
Within my library, I sort the books by genre (nonfiction, historical fiction, poetry, etc.) to help the kids expand their reading minds and choose a variety of books. The genres are color coded using the bins from Lakeshore to help kids easily find what they are looking for.
I am teaching a new grade level this year and working on building my library up to be suitable for 4th graders!
I have already bought many books, but I am still needing a variety of genres to share with my new 4th graders! Please help us by allowing us to start the year with a large selection of books!
