Reading is the Key to Success...Please Help!

My students need a laptop to support remedial reading programs that struggling readers can use at school and support at home.

My Students

"Be the change you want to see in the world," Mahatma Gandhi said, and my students apply this quote in my classroom and dream big every day.

My students come from a very low economic area.

Only 11% of our students can read on grade level. I am trying to close the literacy gap and provide an individualized program for students to receive help through a reading program on a laptop. My students are poverty stricken. Many parents of my students are illiterate. 89% of my students cannot read on grade level. Because my students struggle with reading, they lose interest in school. Our high school graduation rate in the city of St. Louis is only 67% and less than 1% graduate college. I hope to close the literacy gap, so my students are able maintain interest in learning. I feel this project will impact many students and a community. Where there is poverty, there is crime. By educating our students and closing the literacy gap, I feel this will directly affect our community. With education, comes positive change in our community.

My Project

We are requesting a laptop. This will impact an entire community. On the laptop, each student will have access to an individualized literacy program. Many of the parents in our community are illiterate. This program will also be available to parents. Each student's parent and family will also have access to this program to increase their literacy skills. With literacy in their lives, they will be able to qualify for higher paying jobs. This will hopefully improve the poverty line, keep students from becoming discouraged as they move forward in their education, and increase graduation rates.

You can make a difference in a poor community.

You can help close the literacy gap for families in the inner city of St. Louis. You can help decrease crime rates and increase graduation rates. Be the change you wish to see in the world. Provide an opportunity for this community. MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
