Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in South Los Angeles. Many of them are English Language Learners, and they have aspirations of being the first in their families to go to college. In their AVID and STEAM programs, they’re learning what steps they must take in order to be successful in the global market. With your help and support, we can close the achievement gap by giving these kids opportunities and resources they couldn’t necessarily get on their own. Let’s do this together!

My Project

We read. We write. We think. We discuss and analyze multiple texts in our classroom. Sadly, our classroom library hardly expresses our love of reading.

Will you help us add to our collection of well-worn books?

I encourage students to bring books home to read to themselves, to siblings, and to parents, among others, except there are hardly enough books to accommodate 160 students. With their varying tastes, pursuits, and interests, I feel that the choices are limited and do not align with what the students wish to read.

In other words, personal choice is stifled by what books are available, and, unsurprisingly, students do not connect with what happens to be left over.

Their access to books, therefore, lacks enthusiasm and support, and I am concerned that reading will be restricted to the classroom when a love of reading should happen both inside and outside of school.

Yes, while students can check out library books, many on our campus rarely find the time to visit a library when they have to run errands with younger siblings in tow.

Ready access is key for them and significantly removes the anxiety that they will have nothing to read for homework.

With your donations, we can improve our classroom library and support students as they nurture their life-long learning.

We can make dreams come true with your help! Thank you for considering us and for having an open heart.
