Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students hail from a poverty-stricken neighborhood on Chicago's south side. 98% of our student population receives free or reduced lunch. They come to school eager to learn, but they had three teachers before I became their permanent teacher a few weeks ago. We are working arduously to catch up on lost instructional time!
My students' abilities vary greatly, but our resources do not reflect this.
Since their classroom was a first grade classroom previously, my students have resources that do not correspond to their grade.
My Project
My students study five new sight words a week to help them learn to read, but we need more resources in the classroom to practice those words so they can be exposed to them more often. Having these resources during small group instruction would give them an additional thirty minutes of practice every day. That means they would practice their sight words for an additional 150 minutes every week! The notebooks would make it possible to have interactive notebooks, which my students would use during phonics and/or writing time.
With the help of their parents and these resources, I hope to help my students reach their end of the year goals.
