Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Dr. Seuss wrote,"The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." How true that is! My students are just beginning that incredible journey into reading.
I teach in a pretty disadvantaged community where we have over 90% of our students who qualify for our free lunch program.
Our school also has a predominantly Hispanic population; so for many of my students English is a second language for them. All the students in the class I currently teach have also already been identified as Gifted. I work hard to come up with activities that will challenge and interest them. But I love their curiosity and willingness to learn!
My Project
I was in a bookstore recently and picked up some books I remember reading as a child. They are from the Little Golden Books series. What I noticed is the text is spattered with the high frequency words our kids are required to know in 1st Grade. These books are about interesting characters from fairy tales, Disney stories and silly animals.
I can use these books to work with my students in small groups instead of the boring reading passages we usually use. They will find them entertaining which means the kids will pick them up again and again. I guarantee it will raise their reading test scores and make them more fluent readers.
Reading is a fundamental skill that is necessary for all subjects.
As a 1st Grade teacher my responsibility for laying that foundation for good reading skills is paramount. These books would not only help my kids learn to be better readers, but I think it would also help instill in them a passion for reading. Knowledge that reading can be exciting and fun. Since these kids don't have much, they are grateful for any kind of new resources-each book will be savored and enjoyed.
