My Students
An investment in knowledge pays the best interest” – Benjamin Franklin
100% of the students at the inner-city school I teach at receive free lunches, are from low-income families, and live below the poverty line.
My class consists of 15 students who receive Special Education Services due to their disabilities. Due to poverty and low-income status, the basic needs of the students are not always met. The students are in need of caring people to invest in their educational and personal needs to ensure the knowledge and nutrients they receive is "food" for their souls. The students are in need of books, magazines, snacks (variety of energy bars, goldfish, sugar-free juices, etc.) and school supplies (PPE, pencils, notebooks, erasers, crayons, backpacks, etc.) to enrich their minds, hearts, bodies, and educational interests.
Even though their circumstances are not the best, the students have a thirst for knowledge, and a keen sense for education because they know and realize education is the key to success!
My Project
The students will improve their reading fluency skills, build upon their vocabulary skills, and learn how to grow mentally, emotionally, and psychologically by improving their comprehension skills, and giving them the skills to understanding what they read. Reading and enjoying a healthy snack will allow them to escape from their everyday lives while at home, kick up their feet, and venture into a world beyond their wildest dreams. Reading will keep them engaged, pre-occupied, and help them discover who they are by allowing them to connect to characters, events, places, and experiences they are reading about.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
