My Students
My students are hardworking and determined scholars from all walks of life. Daily, they are discovering and learning to embrace the benefits of education through various activities like reading, writing poetry, participating in Socratic seminars, creating visual assessments like poster summaries, hosting literature circles, and carrying on lively discussions. They have so much untapped potential and so many talents, that it never ceases to amaze me!
These scholars strive to work with me to provide a nurturing classroom community, where we all learn and grow together as a family.
It is amazing to watch my students learn and embody learning through restorative practice and other relationship building practices, making them student leaders and ambassadors, and me a facilitator of learning.
My students are resilient because, despite the many obstacles and opposing outside factors they face, they still show up every day, ready to learn. I have a classroom full of writers, readers, thinkers, innovators, leaders, artists, social activists, and even some future teachers who operate as teaching assistants daily! They are curious, proud, inquisitive, hard-working, outspoken, humorous, and caring. Even on the less desirable days, the light of their vivid imaginations and eager minds shines through!
My Project
Books are the pathway to adventure, the passport to faraway lands and the road map to exciting destinations. Classics are good, but books have come a long way since the days of old, and even new age, diverse literature challenges young minds and motivate them to read, learn and express themselves in ways no generation has before. Books make readers omnipresent. Contrary to popular belief, kids read when they are engaged in books that reflect their lives and cultures. Literature from writers with fresh perspectives offers scholars fresh opportunities.
Reading is necessary and most importantly, FUNdamental.
Books are mirrors and windows, teachers and friends. Oprah Winfrey said it best when she said, “Books were my pass to personal freedom." Something very magical happens when scholars open books, the experiences are endless, especially in today's world of diverse literature where everyone has a voice and a unique story to tell.
