My Students
Our school is located in Center City in Philadelphia. Our students come from 43 of Philadelphia's 49 unique zip codes. 94% of our students are African American and 98% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
Our wonderful 5th-grade students are open-minded, yet critical.
They are a diverse and curious group, eager to debate current events. In our classroom, we work hard to support each other and our community.
We stress the 4 Rs; respect, responsibility, resilience, and reflection, with the goal of giving students roots to grow and wings to fly.
My Project
Students who find books that they love to read are more likely to become lifelong readers. Reading at least 20 minutes each day is proven to reduce stress levels, increase language and math skills, and lead to better long term outcomes, including greater education levels, financial security, and lower risk of Alzheimer's. The books provided by this project will serve as independent reading books that my students can read during the school day as well as take home each night to read.
By funding this project, you will be providing my 5th-grade classes with books they have been longing to read.
Filling our library with these desired titles will provide students with the opportunity to read books that they can relate to and have requested. Refreshing our library will generate buzz around the new titles. Students will be excited to devour each book and expand their knowledge of the world through literature.
