My Students

My first graders are excited about reading and enjoy being able to shop for books. Reading levels have been identified, a chart is hanging up in the classroom and students are reading independently. The desire to shop for more books has increased but our classroom library just isn't big enough.

We are a Title I school located in Washington, D.C.

in a neighborhood that is surrounded by many negative factors such as drugs and violence. My students are rarely exposed to new materials outside of the classroom and enjoy being introduced to books that they have never heard of with bright colors and high frequency words that we learn about in class. The challenge of grasping big words and a lack of confidence in reading has not affected my students and I would like for this to continue. By providing an engaging learning environment which includes teaching about reading strategies and a cozy classroom library, students have become interested in reading every day. They enjoy shopping for books, a process that allows frequent visits to the classroom library, and reading to classmates and teachers. Lately, our library books are becoming recycled more frequently and my students need newer content more applicable to recent themes in literature.

My Project

A diverse library collection is just what my students need to continue in their reading process. They are currently reading and rereading the same content due to our current classroom library size. With duplicate copies of books and newer selections, students can begin a new rotation of books that will facilitate more learning. They are excited about reaching their goals in reading and I believe a well sized classroom library along with their motivation to learn has been a big part of this outcome. By providing my 1st graders with new books on their reading levels and some that go beyond their levels, they will become more relaxed and less afraid of reading aloud. Big Words for Little People will teach my students to not be afraid of using big words to communicate their needs. My Brother Charlie will teach students to cherish and value others differences even though they are not the same and books by Jamie Lee Curtis will help students to embrace their individuality.

The goal is to continue to increase my students' motivation to read and we need your help.

It really makes my students feel good and proud to incorporate reading strategies that they have learned during instruction. With newer content, they will continue to tackle frequency words and become more comfortable with reading aloud. Our neighborhood library does not have a well built children's literature selection but our classroom library can.
