This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is located in a high-need area. An overwhelming majority of students qualify for free or reduced lunch and are living at or below poverty level.
My incoming 5th grade students are reading substantially below grade level.
Many have special needs and/or are English language learners.
In an attempt to advance student reading ability, my school has adopted a balanced literacy approach. We hope to improve literacy and provide our students with every opportunity that a quality education can provide.
My Project
My students enjoy reading titles like, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and "39 Clues." They are eager to read after they've completed their work and look forward to their daily independent reading time.
The problem is that we do not have enough books.
We too often end up with waiting lists, as the students, due to lack of supply, are unable to get their chance to read their favorite titles in a timely fashion.
I am expanding our classroom library in order to maintain and further increase my student's desire to read. When equipped with high-interest text that is on their level, it is no longer necessary to coerce them into reading. They ask for it and look forward to it! Amazingly, they are disappointed when their reading time has run out and constantly ask, "Can we have 5 more minutes?"
