This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My kids are amazing. They are curious. They are wonderful. They do want to read but the classroom library is bare, they have read just about all the books I brought from home and they crave more. My mom would say, "los libros son el pan de manana". Books is the bread for tomorrow. Help me feed them!
I teach special education.
My kids are special for many reasons. Despite their classification, they are fighters. They try to understand the work presented but at times it is hard for them. They try. Most of my kids come from homes where money is tight and time is even tighter. Many of them don't own books. A lot of them can't go to the library because it is too far, they owe money, or they are not allowed to go out alone. I work in the same junior high I attended many years ago. I am proud of its achievements. It had it's downfalls but like my students, you cant keep them down. We are a title one school but we push ourselves to achieve more than expected.
My Project
I currently have a similar printer/copier that I rescued from the trash. It jams like crazy but it works for a bit. My students are able to scan work from textbooks to practice at home. They can print downloaded homework that they wouldn't be able to print at home. There has been a decrease of missing homework, and they attribute it to the printer. The poor printer is on its last leg, and I don't want the students to suffer. As for the books, words can not explain how important it is for kids to read. Most of my books have been read over and over, some were donated by my sons. I like the variety chosen because my students are different. Some of them like to read novels others like graphic novels. I want to help the students read more. By having a variety of books the student can choose something they are comfortable with or my hope is that they choose something different.
I believe the printer will give them the tangible work needed to pass, such as worksheets and homework.
They can use it whenever they need it. The books will give them the world. They can own their knowledge. I tell them all the time, you can lose money, you can lose property but you will never lose what you learned.
