Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine never reading a book from cover to cover. Imagine never developing the confidence to read successfully. Many students are slipping between the cracks. My job is to catch them. I want to teach my students to be confident readers and to enjoy reading for gaining knowledge and for pleasure.

I teach at a unique urban school.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds. I teach students Kindergarten through fifth grade, and many of them have individual needs that do not allow them to attend school daily. Many of the students I teach have emotional and social issues, have frequent medical treatments, have safety concerns, have difficulty in a traditional school setting and/or are homeless. My students each face their own challenges every day outside of school.

My Project

My students needs books that are high interest but low readability while they learn the foundations and develop confidence in their reading abilities. As they develop, they need novels to practice the skills they are learning. At the same time, they will read a variety of stories that will include many different themes. By using the selected novels, my students will be exposed to stories that will be educational, compassionate, exciting, funny, and heart-warming. By exposing my students to a variety of novels, I hope to help them develop a joy for reading whatever it is that interests them. Yet at the same time they will continue to develop confidence in their reading abilities.

Many of my students do not have books of their own at home.

Many are not exposed to books, other than textbooks at school. I want to encourage my students to grow as readers by finding what it is that they like to read about. I want to develop a class library that they will want to read and have the confidence to read. Please help me and my students discover a joy of reading and become better readers at the same time!
