My Students
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students this year have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations and instill a passion for reading!
My students attend a DC Public school that is 99% free and reduced lunch.
My class of students includes readers who are 3-6 years below grade level. While my students have struggles at home and academically I know that they want to learn and achieve success. They are fun, excited, and curious 8th grade students ready to work hard to see the type of reading growth that I know we can achieve!
My Project
In order to engage struggling readers you need exciting, page turning books that are on their independent reading level. Students who are behind in reading typically have disengaged from academics because they are continuously given literature that they cannot access. In order to re-engage these students and inspire a love of reading they need high quality, interesting books that are on their level. Students that are behind also need a huge volume of books- in order to increase their reading level they need to be reading multiple books a week. If my students are given this grant they will have the volume and type of books they need to succeed. They will be able to grow 2+ years in reading in just one year if they have the proper materials.
