Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my intervention groups are eager to learn, but lack many background experiences. Nonfiction stories are hard for them because many of them do not have the prior knowledge for these texts.
Our school is a high poverty school.
Over 75% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. Many of our students are also second language learners. They are great kids, but they need exposure to new ideas and experiences. These books and games can help meet that need.
My Project
The students at our school strive to be successful, but struggle with nonfiction stories. Much of this is because of language, and some is because they lack the prior knowledge and experiences to understand these stories. The multi-level nonfiction books, reading comprehension games, and reading comprehension cards I have requested will help the students by exposing them to a variety of texts in various levels and formats. They have exciting, color pictures which will draw the students into the story and help enhance understanding. The questions will help the students to draw meaning and understanding from the text.
