My Students
"The cat sat on a mat." To a first grader, reading can be overwhelming, frustrating, and even boring. I want my students to experience the joy that reading brings. With a listening center my students will be reminded that books are fun.

My students love listening to books on all different subjects. Sadly, reading at home is not what is used to be. There are so many distractions and time constraints that it doesn't always get done. My students need more opportunities to read/follow along with books that are read aloud.
My Project
I want my students to learn to read so they can read to learn. So many students start to dislike reading because it's challenging. Reading is a fundamental building block for all other learning. My goal is to foster a love of reading and learning in my students. A listening center will allow my students to be completely immersed in the beauty of words. Audio books provide excellent models of fluency and intonation. I want to motivate my students to become better readers by giving them examples of good readers. Having a CD player with MP3 capability and headphones will allow me to create my own audio books so I can insert comprehension and critical thinking questions. This will also provide me with more opportunities to integrate learning across the curriculum.
This listening center will not only make a huge impact on my 25 students this year, but it will impact all the students in my future classes.
Reading is the key to a vast world of knowledge but students need the desire to open the door. This listening center will help me foster that love and desire in my first grade students!
