My Students
"I'm wondering what to read next." Matilda, Roald Dahl.
That is a strong statement that I hope to hear a lot this year. Students are encouraged to read all through the day. I hope the students in my classroom leave 3rd grade with a strong desire to read.
My students come from high poverty neighborhoods.
We are a Charter school in Philadelphia. They are eager to always learn something new. They have been encourage throughout the year to read books, however I do not have many books on their level. Most of the students are unable to get to a library and their families are unable to afford to buy the books.
My Project
My students need a classroom library. I am teaching 3rd grade this upcoming school year and I do not have many books that are grade level appropriate. I want to provide the students with the opportunity to read books of all genre.
The reading skills of my students have continued to grow throughout the year. I want to encourage them to push themselves by reading a chapter book.
I believe the students will gain a sense of satisfaction by reading a whole book.
I believe that these books will help the students develop habits of continuous reading that will last throughout their lives. Being able to provide each student with a book to read throughout the year will help them appreciate literature and hopefully promote a lifetime of reading.
