Kratz Elementary is a K-5 school in St. Louis County Missouri. We are located near the Lambert International Airport. Currently, about 80% of the school population qualifies for the free or reduced lunch program. I teach all subjects in a third grade classroom.
Many students in my classroom are reading below grade level. Students can read the words but they don't understand what they are reading. As an adult who loves to read, I want my students to know what it feels like to get lost in a good book.
Students need to practice reading comprehension strategies every time they read a book. These strategies help them understand the text. As adults, we automatically reflect on the text. We compare the text to our own lives; we imagine how the characters feel. Students need to be taught these reading skills. Funding this project will help me provide interesting books and fun reading comprehension learning tools.
Picture this: A few students sitting in a cozy corner of the classroom. They are reading a chapter from their favorite book. At the end of the chapter they run to grab the comprehension beach balls. One student tosses the ball to another and they begin discussing the characters or they begin a conversation about the most interesting event.
Other students are playing reading games at their desks. They are excited to play games! They are becoming better readers.
Help me make reading comprehension fun. Funding this project will provide my students with their favorite books, comprehension game cubes, beach balls, spinners, and literacy games.
