This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school serves approximately 633 students from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade Eight. Staff members are committed to involving all students in experiences that will allow them to complete the core curriculum. Aligning state standards with the curriculum and providing a rigorous instructional program is a continuous team process as we restructure our renewed school to meet and exceed proficiency benchmarks.
My first grade students are from a predominantly low and middle-income section of Newark.
They are constantly smiling, and willing and ready to learn, with positive attitudes toward education.
My Project
Reading is one of the most important components of first grade learners!
In order to help students effectively grow their DRA levels and create a true love for reading, it is pivotal for students to have access to the appropriate materials and resources.
Literacy is the main focus for first grade in my school. We spend the majority of the day participating in centers dan performing independent reading, as well as guided reading. With the help of a leveled classroom library, students will be given access to reading books that are at both their instructional and independent level. Without a leveled library, students may be reading books that will not help build their skills or further their interest in reading due to the fact that they are too easy. A leveled library will challenge the reader and enable them to ask questions as they read.
My students are located in a predominantly low and middle-income section of Newark, NJ, with 95% receiving a free or discounted lunch.
My students have such an eagerness to learn at a young age and truly get excited over the thought of a good book. This leveled library would provide students with book options that would not only improve their skills, but give them something to look forward to when coming to school!
