My Project
Since our students returned to the building after Covid, I began to see a shift in their interest for reading. As a High School English teacher, I have seen a steady decline over the years, of students who like to read. Books can hardly compete with the world of social media. So imagine my joy when I heard students talking about what books they had read and would like to read. Additionally, toward the end of the school year I began reading a novel with my students simply for enjoyment. They could hardly fathom that idea. The majority of my school's demographic are Haitian-American and Latino. Many of them expressed that they come from households where literacy is not celebrated, so they had never read a book simply for enjoyment. It had always been for test prep or school work. As such, the Eagle Wings Book Club was born.
By investing in these books and reading interest starter kits, you will help foster a love for reading, provide a space for social interaction and build communication and comprehension skills.
I had a whopping 77 students to sign up for this club but have had to limit membership to 40 students. We have no budget to purchase books but will look into fund-raising opportunities as the year comes along. I would just like to get them started with a book, free of charge, and it is written by two local writers of Haitian decent, which I believe the students will find highly relatable. I hope you see fit to invest in our venture to capitalize on newfound joy for such an important life skill!
