My Students
Can you imagine being in third grade and not knowing how to read? That is the reality for many of my students. The students in my school come in at a disadvantage, in that they are behind in literacy from the onset of their education. We are working on closing that gap.
My students attend an at-risk school that has over a 90% free/reduced lunch rate.
They are some of the most loving students who want to be here because their home lives are much worse than school. Many of my students have parents in jail, parents who don't work, or parents that simply don't give their kids the time of day.
This is my first year teaching 3rd grade and I am astonished by the number of kids who do not know how to read at a 3rd grade level. I have reading levels from pre-kinder to 5/6th grade. Many of my struggling readers don't have letter/sound recognition or know how to blend the letters together to make words.
My Project
My students will use the resources during reading and writing workshop. They will be able to use them in lessons with me and independently for more practice. I envision having groups of students working on these resources during their center/independent reading time. They will learn letter/sound recognition, phonemic awareness, and how to build words which will then translate to both their reading and writing.
My mission as a teacher it to make sure we are sending our future into the world armed with as many tools as they can.
Unfortunately, not all children are given an equal chance at success. Even after teaching 13 years, I strive for greatness in my students. Reading is one of the most basic skills that everyone has a right to learn. My hope is that with these resources that my kids will have just one more way of reaching their potential.
