Reading is awesome but sometimes children are not motivated to read. How can we encourage them to pick up a book and look forward to reading for a prolonged period of time? The answer is...find great authors and terrific books and our children will want to read.
I work with children with learning differences.
They need extra support each day in all curriculum areas to help them progress and improve each day. I try to encourage them to read and that is why I am requesting books that I feel will interest and motivate them. When I see them get lost in a book, I know they are gaining knowledge and at the same time their reading level is improving. Reading should be fun, not a chore. I know if they are introduced to specific authors, they might realize that there ARE books out there that are fun to read. Instead of picking up a video game, they will want to pick up a book. My students have so much potential to succeed and I am there to make sure that they have the proper materials to allow them to improve each and everyday. I want them to feel good about themselves and by increasing their reading levels, they can do better in all their major core subjects.
My Project
My students will have the opportunity to select the book of their choice and borrow it from my class library. They can bring the book home and keep it for three weeks. I will have a book chat with them and ask them to respond to their books in their notebook.
Having these books in my classroom will certainly benefit my students.
I am confident that they will look forward to reading their new books and just seeing that smile on their face when they get lost in a book, is priceless!
