My Students

Our students are AWESOME! They are unique, creative, and talented. They come from all walks of life. We have a wonderful school and are surrounded by supportive parents and family members. Our school operates just like a community. We provide for our students emotionally, mentally, physically and educationally. The well-being of our students is our top priority.

WMES thrives on teaching the WHOLE child.

Not only do we focus on reading and math, but we also strive to teach our students science, social studies, and the arts. We are a school that is dedicated to creating 21st century learners. We can only do this if we have updated materials and resources.

Our school has approximately 460 students. We have four self-contained special needs classes, as well as one preschool class. Our teachers all have diverse backgrounds and exhibit a variety of teaching styles. Our teachers do a wonderful job of differentiating for our students.

My Project

Our school strives to create a positive and healthy reading environment. We have put into place many programs to help students improve their reading skills as well as develop a love for reading. For our students in kindergarten and first grade we are giving an extra push to help develop the skills necessary to learn how to read. Our specials teachers in art, technology, music and physical education work with all grade levels every day. The students spend 55 minutes with each specials teacher every week. Our specials teachers will now be integrating their specialty with phonics and reading for all kindergarten and first grade students!

SnapWords cards help students actively learn sight words with detailed pictures and actions, thus improving reading comprehension and fluency.

Each specials teacher will receive two sets of SnapWords cards to use with their kindergarten and first grade students. They will spend time daily reviewing the SnapWords with their students. The pictures help illustrate the words in a way that students can better store the information in their memory. They have been proven to help students who are visual learners, students with ADD and ADHD, and students with autism and dyslexia. In addition to the picture on the front there are sentences on the back that help the students with comprehension of the word. So, not only do the students learn the word, they also learn the meaning!

The first and second set of SnapWords cards includes 118 high-frequency words that kindergarten and first grade students work on throughout the year. Once the students master those 118 we would like to order additional sets, as well!
