This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are the most curious children on the planet. And I don't say that just because they are my students, but because they have that sparkle in their eyes, like stars, that only children who want to learn more and more each day can have. This project, coincidentally, was born from a question they brought to me.
We were reading a novel in Spanish (my class is a second language class) and using a traditional Spanish-English dictionary to look up words we didn't know, when my students said to me: “Yes, teacher, we understand the translation now, but what does the word actually mean?” And that’s when I realized that many of them wanted to go further — to get their hands on the word, to search for its deeper meaning.
That’s how I decided to create this classroom dictionary project, so they could go beyond simple translation, see examples in sentences, and expand their horizons.
The dictionaries I am requesting are specifically adapted for the classroom setting, which makes them suitable for my elementary school students. In addition, they are a convenient size that makes them easier to handle. With these dictionaries, my students will be able to read without relying solely on cold translations. They will also expand their vocabulary as they come into contact with Spanish phrases and expressions included in the definitions and examples.
As an added bonus, they will be able to read independently whenever they choose a book from my classroom library, with the resources they need to enjoy and make the most of the experience.
