Reading in Science

My students need a class set (30) of Current Science Weekly Reader magazines to keep up to date on the latest science news and information.

My Students

Content area reading is imperative to students' academic success. Too often, middle school students' reading skills decline or remain stagnant because they aren't encouraged to read enough.

My science scholars are 7th grade students in an under-funded urban school in Missouri.

Although science is best learned through inquiry-based education, content area reading is equally important. My students enjoy visiting the classroom library. They look forward to the duplicated articles I place on their desks. Imagine their faces when each child in class has his or her own colorful, glossy copy of a Weekly Reader magazine!

My Project

When my students are done with an assignment or test, they have what we've come to know as "waiting work" on their tables. This is usually a ditto copy of an article I've found or have printed off of the Internet. They enjoy reading the articles, but the black and white pictures and text leaves much to be desired in the way of engaging my students. With the Weekly Reader classroom set, my students will be able to enjoy the rich, vibrant colors the magazines have to offer, as well as the grade level, age appropriate content. They will be able to explore concepts in Earth science, health and life science, and physical science.

Your generosity will ensure that my science scholars have updated, interesting science articles readily available at their fingertips.

They will be able to engage with the content that is crucial to building a solid scientific knowledge base in order to prepare them for high school. Moreover, your donation will allow my students to continue developing their reading skills, which is essential to closing the achievement gap in education.
