Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year I was given a group of fifth graders who are full of energy, have different personalities, and various learning styles. They come with such a wide range of interests that my challenge with this group is to try to keep up with them. We are a Title I school right in the heart of my own childhood and present-day neighborhood of Paradise Hills, San Diego. My students know the value of respect, caring, and friendship, and it shows in the way they communicate and collaborate with each other inside and outside of the classroom.

My Project

With the goal of becoming intense, life-long readers, I want to provide a classroom environment that will allow for a group of fifth students who have a wide range of needs to feel comfortable and confident enough to make good choices for themselves. Filling my library with new and exciting titles, like Wonder and Dog Man, will entice them to grab one and get lost for a moment in the story. Giving them the fun choices with flexible seating will allow them to let go of distractions and focus on the important task at hand...which is to become thoughtful and critical readers. Also, with the added responsibility of putting their thinking in writing, having a strong pencil sharpener in class will eliminate the wasted time of looking for a pencil and/or sharpening one with a manual sharpener, which will allow them more time to writing their thoughtful reading responses.

"Wow, I've never been in a classroom like this before...it's so cool!" said one student on the first day of school.

Hearing that made all my efforts all worth it! Seeing the kids walk in excited to choose a seat for the day just puts a smile on my face. With already a month of school down and nine months to go, I am already seeing the wear and tear on some of my flexible seating choices. I would love to be able to provide fun wobble chairs and fluffy donut cushions that can withstand fifth graders sitting on them all year long. All of my students sitting comfortably, with a book that they love and smiles on their faces is my vision for my fifth graders making moves towards reaching their goals as readers and writers with a choice!
