Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine learning a second language without hearing good examples of that language? My students have the opportunity to hear amazing read aloud passages to help them improve their comprehension, but we have no listening center in our class.

My students are all 4th grade ELLs, and reading in English is a struggle for most of them.

They would be so blessed to hear stories read in fluent English to help with their pronunciation and comprehension. My students come from low SES backgrounds, they don't have access at home to the Internet, and most of their families do not speak English, watch English TV shows, nor listen to English radio. So many days, the only English my kids hear is in our classroom. I want them to have the opportunity to hear great examples of reading in English. I want them to hear what good fluency and inflection sounds like to a new reader. I want them to know that they can be just as good in their reading of English.

My Project

We would like to have a listening center in class so that students can follow along with longer, more difficult texts in English. Very often my students are frustrated by the length of the textbook, and give up easily when they cannot pronounce a new word in English. A listening center would allow the students to follow along and learn new vocabulary, new phonetic spelling patterns, and give my students the opportunity to be exposed to many new stories.

With better readers, my students will be better prepared for life.

Everything we do in life revolves around reading. If my students cannot read fluently in English, my fear is that they will drop out in the next few years when things get too difficult. I want my students to have the chance to be exposed to various texts, that they would otherwise be likely to give up on.
