The background knowledge my students possess does not align with the knowledge they are expected to come to school with, so they struggle in many courses. Add this challenge to the new growing global community and social media devices and the result is a careless contribution to public discussions.
I teach in Central New York in a small city that truly is a representation of America.
This city has gone through a lot of changes in the past ten years. The ethnic and economic diversity mirror the trends of the United States. These changes and unique conditions give my students the opportunity to face many of the obstacles and experiences that our country is encountering.
My Project
In order to be successful members of this community, my students need to be aware of what is going on around them. They also need to be given tools and strategies to maneuver the challenges and obstacles they will inevitably encounter. This resource, The New York Times Upfront, will give them the perspective and knowledge they need to achieve just this. Upfront supplies the needed knowledge at an appropriate level for the students, and the articles and political cartoons are always high interest. I will be using this magazine to teach perspective, build reading levels, work on comprehension skills, and teach summarizing strategies that will help all students understand what is going on around them. Ultimately they will be able to make educated decisions and positive contributions to their community.
It is essential for students to be globally aware and understand what is going on in the world they live in.
I want to provoke critical thinking in the young minds of today so that they may be our leaders of tomorrow. today's New York Times Upfront magazine will help my students make world connections while improving their critical thinking and reasoning literacy skills, which are essential to survive in today'ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs society.
