My students are a diverse group of learners from many different countries and unique family units. What we love most about our class is that it is a melting pot of faiths and many culturally diverse backgrounds.
As a child, reading was my favorite subject and I am endeavoring to instill that passion and love of reading in our classroom community; to show them that reading makes their brains grow and sparkle and that reading is the ticket to anywhere you want to go.
My beautiful and creative scholars would love to be able to choose where they want to enjoy their books, but they have limited choices. These students would benefit enormously from alternative seating such as beanbags and pillows so that they can get cozy with their books.
As the scholars look for faces and stories like theirs, for scientists and historians, dreamers and builders, I want them to have a rich variety of text to choose from. I want them to be comfortable as they read for all sorts of reasons: for information, for entertainment, for escape and for life!
My Project
As a lifelong reader, I want nothing more that to create that same passion in my learners. They are curious and opinionated, responsible and kind, and they are hungry for new learning. Having a classroom library will enable them to get their hands on books from many different genres and many different authors. They will be able to read books at their own level as well as discover the joy of looking through more challenging books just for the pleasure of the experience. Books will be treated as friends, to be read and reread as they practice their fluency and think like readers.
Having some cozy places to relax will give them a place to enjoy the journeys they will embark on with their books.
Additionally, with different backgrounds, come different reading experiences in the home. With new pillows and beanbags, a child who might not have a quiet area of their own, will be able to find someplace calm in a corner of the classroom.
