My fifth grade classroom is located in the East Village, a lively neighborhood in downtown Manhattan. Our school is dedicated to providing "an environment where all children and all families are valued, welcomed, cared for and supported" (quoted from our mission statement). Our classroom is a beautiful mix, spanning different cultures, races, socioeconomic backgrounds, and gender identities.
My students are passionate about social justice, and have strong opinions on just about everything!
They are hungry to learn, and their eyes light up when we explore new topics or resources.
My Project
Every day, during Reading Workshop, I meet with one or two small groups of students in our reading groups. The kids eagerly await their meeting day and (no exaggeration!) cheer when it's their group's turn. They love meeting in these groups, and having the opportunity to read and discuss with each other.
I am requesting five sets of high-engagement, high-quality books for these reading groups.
I have chosen the books based on the interests of the students in each group--both the topics, and authors (Roald Dahl and Jerry Spinelli are class favorites). In addition, I know that each of these titles will provide rich opportunities to explore specific reading strategies. I am also requesting 4 mini dry-erase boards to use in these small groups.
