As a teacher in a rural town supported by a state university, I see a diverse blend of students. Some are native to our state, while others, visiting from halfway around the world, are enrolled with us while their parents work as visiting scholars. Many languages and cultures are represented in my middle school of almost 900 students.
Reading and literacy skills bind us together.
Together, we read popular young adult books and classic literature. We write about our experiences and our reactions to what we read. It is through these interactions that we learn that, maybe, we are not so different after all.
My Project
I would love to give my students the opportunity to participate in this year’s Global Read Aloud. Each year, grade-level appropriate texts are selected, and teachers all over the world read these titles with their students on the same timeline. With technology, we can then connect and discuss with students all over the world!
When I participated last year, I found my struggling readers were more engaged with the read aloud when they had a copy of the book in front of them.
A class set of the book along with guided reading strips will therefore help students be more successful.
