Reading Fuels Empathy and Encourages Understanding

My Project

Social issues are topics that matter greatly to the young human beings who enter my classroom every day. February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions to our society and learn about historical events that make our country what it is today. Follow Chester!: A College Football Team Fights Racism and Makes History will give insight into a part of our country's past that my fourth graders may not have heard about yet.

My fourth graders and I will read these beautiful books to give us insight into a variety of perspectives to spark conversations and inspiration as we celebrate progress around issues of equality.

Once Upon an Eid: Stories of Hope and Joy by 15 Muslim Voices and Under My Hijab are beautiful books that will encourage my students to see the beauty in our differences as well as our similarities and fuel empathetic readers as they see the experiences of others.
