Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school population has changed so much in the past few years. We serve free or reduced-price lunch to over 70% of our population. We have seen an increase of incoming families that have immigrated with very few resources. Our school community relies more than ever on schools to be able to provide resources and materials to all students despite all the budget cuts we have faced.
My Project
It is important for children to see themselves in book they read, to be able to identify with the characters in the books and feel proud of their diversity! Reading isn't enough, the types of books they read matter too. Reading books with diverse characters from different countries and cultures help will help my students develop empathy, knowledge, understanding and hopefully acceptance of their classmates. These books will help my students embrace and help us celebrate the uniqueness of our classmates. Having a cozy reading area with an area rug, flexible seating and fairy lights will excite my students about reading and will help them enjoy their reading time!
