Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We teach in a low-income, urban, multicultural high school, where over 80% of the students receive free or reduced price lunch, meaning they live at or below the poverty level. Our students are excited and eager to learn, but they often need additional supports that are currently not available because of decimating budget cuts.

Our students are amazing for their diversity.

In our AP English Language and Composition class, we have over 10 nationalities represented, various religious and cultural backgrounds at play, and students from every socioeconomic level. But, they function as a team. For many of them, this is their first experience taking a college-level class. For others, this is their first structured exposure to rhetoric and the world of literary nonfiction.

My Project

These books will allow for our class to hold monthly “book clubs,” in which teams of students read, discuss, and dissect the arguments made in great works of nonfiction. Their stores of knowledge and their cultural capital will increase, and their chances of scoring higher on the AP exam will, too.

These powerful works of nonfiction and argumentation will also serve as “mentor texts,” lighting their own path as a burgeoning writer and rhetoric.

More often than not, our students do not have access or the interest to read full-length nonfiction texts. With your help, our students will be able to learn about the real heroes and the real problems affecting our country and world, past and present.
