Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach math to students in an elementary dual language urban public school. About 70% of my students come from families in need. The student population includes children from a variety of cultural backgrounds and socioeconomic levels.
All of the children in my school are learning two languages, but they must also learn to read and write the language of mathematics. To be a good math reader, you have to read from right to left, left to right and from top to bottom or bottom to top. Not only is it important to decode and understand the words they read, it is also important they be able to read numeric and non-numeric mathematical symbols. Test data shows that our students are not doing as well as we'd like them to be in reading or mathematics.
Reading books with a mathematical context is one way I am trying to improve students' reading and mathematics comprehension. I have already established a mini math library that is a growing success! Students are regularly checking out books to read at home. What we lack is a greater variety of books!
Your help will help to maintain my mini math library. Students will have more books to choose from and greater variety of mathematical concepts to explore. With more books, more students will also be able to use the mini math library.
