Adding some humor and a lively character really grabs the attention of the third grade students in my classroom. They enjoy being able to relate to the characters they read about. Being able to laugh while reading encourages them to continue reading and further understand the story.
My classroom is full of lively seven and eight year olds that love to listen to and read stories.
Each classroom has a library of leveled books, but we have very few class sets of books to enjoy together. Their favorite part of the day is sitting together on the carpet and listening to a read-aloud. They are eager to share their understanding, thinking, and new ideas. Their favorite stories have characters their own age that they are able to relate to and laugh with. Getting novels in their hands will allow them to read along, rather than just listen to the story. Exposure to text is exactly what they need to become successful, independent readers.
My Project
My classroom will use the set of the novel Fudge-A-Mania to read as a class. This will allow us to have discussions on character development, setting, plot, theme, and many other comprehension lessons. It will also allow me to discuss the English language and grammatical challenges within the text. The third grade students will be able to grow from their new understandings.
The audio CD is also an important piece to this project because it allows absent students to remain in the discussions and be caught up. Many of the students also like to hear the story more than once and this would allow for a listening station in the classroom. Overall, they will continue to grow as readers!
This project will help my third grade students to grow into successful, independent readers.
They will be able to read along with a text that is scaffolded just above their reading level. With teacher help, they will feel confident in reading and understanding this book, helping them to grow and move up reading levels. It is also a story with humor, encouraging students to enjoy reading.
