My students need 4 headphones, a CD player, a wireless keyboard, 4 headphones with microphones, a laser pointer, and computer speakers to use their new online literacy program.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students in special education with autism and related disorders typically struggle with literacy. Most of my students lack the basics and foundational skills of reading that they need to progress.
My students are in the upper elementary grades (third through fifth) in a special day class for students with autism and related disorders.
Many students at our school come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds with very few resources. Most students do not have the money to buy books and other school supplies.
My Project
My students are starting a new English Language Arts and English Language Development program from Scholastic called Read 180 and System 44. In this program, students have the opportunity to learn through repeated practice using a computer program. The program uses microphones on the headphones to record their own voice reading the words and sounds. The students also read decodable books and can listen to them while they read. Headphones are crucial to both the computer and listening stations for the reading programs' centers.
In addition to the centers, the program has a lot of activities that can be reproduced or used on the computer, projecting the activity to the whiteboard. The program also includes videos to introduce the topics and reinforce the main idea and details. Computer materials, such as wireless keyboard and speakers will help me to teach the lesson using the program we already have!
My students need to build upon the limited reading skills they have, the technology materials will help them to reach their potential.
Learning to read can change their lives, from opening up their imaginations in a book to finding a job later in life.
