This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a diverse group of 8th graders in Language Arts at a middle school in a semi-rural community. My students come from diverse countries and backgrounds; this tapestry of different experiences and cultures makes our student body one that is interesting and charismatic. Many of my students also live in challenging economic conditions; nearly 70% of our students live at or below the poverty level. My 8th graders are hardworking, kind, and eager to learn; they have already shown a love for learning, and I want to provide them the tools to enhance their learning experiences.
My Project
My students are growing as readers this year as they set goals for independent reading and choose books that meet them at their point of need as learners. Some students read independently while others like to read the same book with a partner or form a small reading club. Our goal is to grow as readers and expand our horizons in terms of genres, topics, and Lexile bands.
Students get regular time each week to read in my class as well as a dedicated 30 minutes a day in which everyone in our school is enjoying a book of his/her choice.
These books are ones that are not available in our media center or ones that students have requested for our classroom library. Having access to high interest books with diversity in characters, genres, and topics will nourish their hearts and minds!
