This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a Title l Distinguished school, and 90% of the school population receives free/reduced-price lunch. We currently have Breakfast-in-the-Classroom to provide food for those students whose families are struggling financially. My classroom consists of students with intellectual disabilities - ADHD, Autism, SLD, Visual/Auditory Processing Disorder.
They love reading all kinds of books, especially in a comfortable setting!
As adults, we like to be comfortable on our lounge chairs, sofas, and pillows. So why not give our students the same environment, which will encourage their love of reading? Students with intellectual disabilities, especially need flexible seating options in their classroom, so they can access the curriculum as best they can.
My Project
My students need flexible seating options for our classroom library. I am requesting various items such as a comfy floor seat, as well as, pillows, so my readers can be nice and cozy as they engage in their favorite books in our classroom library.
Flexible seating options help give students a space to be comfortable as they engage in leisure reading.
These flexible seating options will give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. My students especially need to move while they are learning in the classroom. Flexible seating allows them to get out their wiggles actively without creating distractions for other students. This furthermore increases oxygen flow to the brain that helps students stay healthy and focused.
