Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach English Language Learners who have to overcome many obstacles on a daily basis. My students already have a language barrier, and my job is to make their transition to a new school in a new country as comfortable as possible. Imagine if you all of a sudden moved to a new country without any knowledge of the culture and language—how would you feel? Lost? Afraid? Angry? Sad? Frustrated? Through it all, their resilience is inspiring, especially in this day and age.
My Project
I have many Spanish-speaking students who would benefit from reading in their home language. By reading in their home language and mastering those comprehension and fluency skills, they can transfer it over into their new language. Furthermore, by reading something entertaining, they will be motivated to read in general. I strive to have my students read for at least 20-30 minutes a day every day, in order to build on their comprehension and fluency. This series is quite a favorite among my students, and by reading it in Spanish, they may be motivated to read it in English as well.
